A lonely and dark entrance gate is what nobody would want and yet someone gets. Gates like this one usually open to dark courtyards or private roads and are a fundamental part of that inextricable maze in which my city, Rome, has been, and is being, developed. Those who lived here forever know the maze and all its secrets, the others tend to stay on major roads and squares, avoiding the dark corners and the creepy access to the unknown.
