The sixth of November is Claudia’s birthday, so happy birthday to my wife. We had a small but tasty dinner with my sister, her boyfriend, and another friend of my sister. We were in five, we started with several fish carpaccio and then we had spaghetti with vongole (clams), Claudia’s favorite first course. We drank white wine, grappa, and a South African sweet wine which was much closer to a sherry than to a passito. Very nice, indeed.
We will properly celebrate by going out this Saturday, so the dinner was just not to leave the day of her birthday without any celebration. The thing is, however, that since we turned thirty we are not really into our birthdays anymore. I mean, in the current rotting European society we’re still defined as “young”, but surely we’re not a boy or a girl anymore. The day we turned thirty we also turned man and woman. Now, the next step will (eventually) be to turn old or dead. There isn’t really anything cool to turn into because of the age anymore. So why should we celebrate?
Well, I guess we are finally experiencing that (before incomprehensible) relationship with birthdays that our parents always (in our memories) had (and keep having). Nobody will get excited in our ages till we overtake the eighties, I guess. So, birthdays now are those days testifying that we’re legally getting older and older, and so friends and families gather to celebrate the fact that, after all, here still we are and the path isn’t over, is it?
Wait, there’re also the presents, aren’t them, to sweeten up the sour reality (which sounds very close to surreality, doesn’t it?). I’m buying Claudia a bike for her 34th birthday, so she can enjoy a little more the beauty of living so close to the city center.
I’m not turning 34 for another three months, but this year I’ve a reason for waiting (and fearing) it very much: the day I’ll turn 34, the 12th of February, this 365(+1) Days of NEX-7 project is going to end…
