Il dolce far niente. One of my most beloved Italian idioms, literally “the sweetness of doing nothing”, that is, the art of enjoying one’s laziness by totally embracing it and enriching it with little pleasures. We master this art in Italy, myself I feel I got a PhD in it. However, due to the infinite series of events of the past year, I couldn’t really practice this art as much as I would have liked to.
Yet, today I finally had a proper Sunday dedicated to resting. My in-laws came to pick us up with their van and drove the whole family to a nice restaurant in the countryside near Rome. All to celebrate Claudia’s father birthday. Needless to say, the food and the wine were excellent at an ecstatic level and we all ended up feeling like happy stuffed turkeys.
The place hosted a wide green lawn, with big shady trees, and kids playing everywhere. Agata had fun with a bunch of girls while I rested lying on the grass, watching her and properly practicing my dolce far niente skills: letting the digestion do its job, enjoying the breeze and the soft and fresh grass, focusing on the close details of the grass around me while letting my mind wander freely.

  1. Very fitting image & text as always, Luca. Even more fitting for me, as I am on holiday from around 18:00 JST (2 hours 10 minutes and counting)! Loving the colour and boke in this one. I’ll have a similar view for the next 10 days 😉
