Sony RX1, 35mm f2 Carl Zeiss
ISO100, f/2, 1/200, raw

This is my (favorite) photographic equipment. Should I have to leave everything I own but three cameras (plus the RX1 which lives around my neck) these would be the selected ones, the Sony NEX-7 with the nokton 50mm f1.1, the Bessa R2 with the color-skopar 35mm f2.5, and the Lomo LC-A, together with a few of my favorite film rolls, an extra battery for the NEX-7, the charger, a light meter, and a remote shutter cable. The thing is, taking at least one photograph is the second/fifth thing I do each and every day, meaning that I may start immediately after breakfast, or I can leave it to be the last thing to do before going to bed. It shall happen, no matter what. Having to chose some equipment to represent this action, I went for these three, because they mean a lot to me, they were the key through which my photography evolved into something personal and special in the last two years. I guess they are the tools dividing the Luca that takes good photos from the Luca that tells his stories with his photography.
So, this is my (favorite) photographic equipment. What does it tell about me?
First of all, it tells that even being a digital photographer/blogger, I keep doing some film photography, slides and bw, so I may be a nostalgic, someone who likes experimenting with chemicals, or just an hipster. It also says that I like compact systems, manual focusing, and most of all I love to take my time for each shot. Finally, it tells you that I go for fast lenses and nothing wider than a 32mm.
Without my (favorite) photographic equipment I would be a very different photographer. The Bessa brought me back into thinking each and every shot, something the digital DSLRs made me forget, and gave me the very first unobtrusive tool for story-telling. The LC-A was a step further into unobtrusiveness, it showed me how important it was to have a camera always in my pocket, and its mental light meter showed me a different way of taking night-shots. The NEX-7, well, you should know how decisive it has been in my life. If you don’t, just take a look at the whole 365(+1) Days of NEX-7 blog. Fact is, this little sexy black body made it possible to translate all the lessons I had learned from the other two analog cameras into the digital world. Which, as always, opens millions of new opportunities.

  1. I love my Bessa R3M such great value camera, I did hire a NEX7 a few weeks ago and really liked the experience of using it. Very tempted to buy know, but I’m trying to be patient and see what the updated version will be like
