I’m deeply attracted by our stairs. I’ve always dreamt of having a house with a modern staircase in its middle. However, I never lived in one until now… well, not exactly, we had a stairway in our place in Leiden, but who ever lived in the Netherlands knows how crazy and not exactly elegant the classic Dutch stairs are. I remember climbing them with my elbows most of the times (OK, most of the times I was going to bed a bit drunk).
The staircase in our new place, instead, is brilliant: a light weight structure of metal and wood, self supporting, enclosed by glass walls. These walls are my favorite thing in the house. They are completely transparent, hence almost invisible, and yet they prevent from falling downstairs. And as any glass, if you look at them with the right angle, they become completely reflective, perfectly mirroring what’s in front of them. You change a bit the angle, and they start showing what’s on the other side. I love playing with the optical effects of glasses, deciding how much reflection and transparency to add to the image.
